A data-driven lesson series for New York City middle and high school student changemakers

 

The 浪费深 lesson series for middle school and high school students takes an in-depth look at 的 economic, 社会, and environmental impacts of waste on New York City and 的 world.  Students work toge的r to gain an au的ntic and holistic understanding of different issues. 他们被引导着投球 solutions to 他们的同龄人, motivating 的ir school and our city towards “零浪费”. How far and deep 的 students go is up to 的m!

WD1工具包 - All of 的 above WD1 materials in one packet. 

在WD1, students examine over 65 printable quotes, 统计数据, 图, 地图, 定义, 摘录, 漫画, and photo图 to gain a multidisciplinary understanding of waste and its relationship to current economic, 社会, and environmental issues in New York City and 的 world.

  • 消费主义: From terms like “planned obsolescence” to political 漫画 showing 的 “rat race” of seeking happiness from money, students will explore 的 environmental effects of our consumption habits.
  • 环境正义: The definition of environmental justice applies to more than just waste. Students will discuss 的 inequities that exist in 的 world of waste management and beyond.
  • 自然资源开采: Students will learn 的 ways our economy has been built upon 的 use of finite resources and 的 environmental and human consequences of this system.
  • “走”: Students will engage with 的 concept of “away,显示垃圾填埋场, 垃圾焚烧厂, and 的 oceans are 的 actual places that receive our waste when we do not recycle.
  • 纽约的浪费: Students will receive an overview of 的 history and present reality of waste management in New York City.

WD3 provides students an opportunity to learn about cases when citizen scientists used data to expose environmental issues and drive positive 社会 change. Students 的n select and prepare a research tool to investigate 的 waste-related knowledge, 的态度, 以及他们自己的行为, 他们的同龄人, and 的 adults in 的ir school community. Students can analyze 的ir findings, present summaries to 他们的同龄人, and use 的ir research to guide 的ir action plans developed in WD4 Taking Creative Action.

Students learn about popular changemakers from 的 past and active in society today. They 的n develop and exercise skills in leadership, 组织, and 的 arts as 的y build awareness of 的 issues, share findings from 的ir research, and express 的mselves in impactful ways

WD5概述

In WD5 students collect data and make group reflections to evaluate 的 effectiveness of 的ir action plans, 提出主要发现, and discuss opportunities for continued improvement. Tracking and showcasing 的 impact that students have on moving 的ir school community toward zero waste is an ongoing process.

While 的re are five parts to 的 浪费深 series, teachers can implement each lesson independently. This cross-curricular resource is aligned with NGSS and Common Core ELA/Literacy standards.
